Microsoft Windows Server 2022
Microsoft Windows Server 2022 is the latest version of the server operating system (LTSC release date Aug 18, 2021), dedicated to modern businesses which operate in both cloud and on-premise IT environments. Improvements to security capabilities (e.g. Secured-core server and default TLS 1.3 protocol), support for hybrid solutions (Azure and on-premises), and a pre-installed Microsoft Edge (instead of the retired Internet Explorer) are a small part of Windows Server 2022’s new features, together with many general performance enhancements.
Windows Server 2022 is available in two main editions:
- Standard – the go-to choice for all organizations who require the classic Windows Server features, such as RDS connections, virtualization, etc.
- Datacenter – intended for companies with highly-virtualized IT environments.
Apart from that, there are two more editions dedicated for the specialized scenarios:
- Essentials – this OEM-licensed edition has the same features as the Standard edition, but is limited to 1 CPU socket and 10 cores.
- Datacenter Azure – a Datacenter edition dedicated only to highly-virtualized environments in Azure.
The Windows Server 2022 license rules apply a core-based method, which means that a core license has to be assigned to every physical core on the server (with a minimum of 16 core licenses per server). Additionally, every user and/or device accessing the server and its services must be licensed with a CAL (Client Access License). More information is available in the official Microsoft licensing leaflet: Licensing Windows Server 2022 on-premises

What’s the difference between Windows Server 2022 Core and Desktop Experience?
The Core and Desktop Experience are two install options which can be chosen when installing Windows Server software on the server. With the Server Core install option, the standard graphical user interface (like in the desktop version of Windows 10, for example) is not installed; the management of the server can be performed by administrators through the command line using PowerShell, SConfig, or by remote options. The Desktop Experience install option enables the local and remote server management through the standard graphical user interface (GUI).
