When looking for an SQL Server to deploy in their IT infrastructure, organizations often jump to the latest version on offer by Microsoft – currently this is SQL Server 2022 which allures new customers with a prospect of deeper collaboration with Microsoft Azure services. However, it also brings important (and potentially quite costly) changes in its licensing terms and conditions, which should be carefully evaluated by customers who wish to avoid unnecessary spending, especially if it’s for features they do not need or use.

Microsoft’s SQL Server 2014 will reach the end of its extended support on July 9th this year – only a couple of months away. If your organization is still using it, it’s high time to think about how this will affect your IT infrastructure. While an upgrade is not strictly necessary, as the software will continue functioning even past the support end date, it will no longer receive patches and security updates, and would eventually become obsolete and incompatible with modern software and hardware requirements.

Windows 7 and 8 users are facing an important shift: the free upgrade path to newer Windows versions is no longer technically, nor legally available. This change has profound implications for businesses and organizations that are still operating on these older systems as it removed the cost-saving opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 and 11 for free.

As of October 2023, Microsoft is removing Teams from their Enterprise suites for the EEA and Switzerland. The affected subscription plans, such as Office 365 E1/E3/E5 and Microsoft 365 E3/E5, will no longer include the popular collaboration service – it will be available for purchase only as a separate product.
